I believe the best gardens begin with plants – and an understanding of the natural world.

I’m Adam, the garden designer behind Fält Gardens. I create plant-led gardens with character, colour and life.

Nature is a constant source of inspiration and consideration in my work. However I don’t believe a garden has to look wild to make space for nature — it can be restrained, beautiful, colourful and carefully designed whilst providing food and shelter for birds, insects and other wildlife.

Plants have always been there

Some of my earliest memories are of gardens: my grandad in his rose garden. Our Dhalia-obsessed neighbour. Saturdays at the local nursery. Watching the birds on the feeders...

Gardens have become a way of bringing together three things I’ve always loved: plants, design and the natural world.

About

From graphic design to garden design

Before working professionally with gardens, I was a graphic designer. Many of the principles from graphic design apply equally to gardens — composition, proportion, colour and rhythm… But gardens are alive! Plants grow and interact, seasons change and wildlife plays its part. Designing with those dynamics, rather than creating something static, is what I find so compelling.

Design grounded in horticulture

My gardening experience is supported by an RHS Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture and a Diploma in Planting Design from the London College of Garden Design. I have also been part of David Cheshire’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal-winning team in 2022, an experience that further developed my understanding of plants, planting and attention to detail. Together, this horticultural knowledge and formal design training inform the way I work – understanding what plants need to thrive, how they grow together and how a garden will establish and develop over time.
